Things

We all like to stay organised. Well we like to say we do to people around us. It gives us a sense of anti-procrastination when we write something down on paper or in one of our software packages that can store 1 trillion records of information. Yeah i can see all of us storing that amount of data about our daily lives. In fact we need to buy these little devices that will make sure no matter where we are they are always at arms length, in a pocket, or even attached to our belts. PDA’s are a bit outdated now, which is the electronic version, not the kisses and hugs you give to a partner. What we have now, are life planners, entertainment gizmos and communications tools all rolled into one. Thinking about you mr. iPhone, for example.

Anyhow. Lets assume that i am not being sarcastic here for a moment, and think these things are awesome! Well they are! If you use them truthfully and aren’t some web 2.0 want to be wanker here. You know who you are. If you think the Moleskin is awesome and contains super magical suave powers, or if you think that wearing a vest will make you look more intellectual with your sleek comb-over hairstyle. Then yes, stamp to your head. You are a web 2.0 wannabe wanker. Shame on you. If however you have 1 trillion projects going on in this current moment and you want to organise the tasks in these projects. Wait wait…. and you own an iPhone or iPod touch, then keep reading! If not, bye.

Meet Things! no seriously. Say hi! Things is am awesomely stable program that works much under the GTD mentality. Although the course material is a rip off, the concept behind getting things out of your mind and into a system your brain trusts 110.19% is really awesome! Things allows you to dump all ideas into an inbox, whereby when you have 2 seconds free you can organise these items into a systematic order, whereby you will promise yourself to later come back and get them done, these things, to get done, get them done.

That is, indeed, a screenshot of my Things! So how do i use it you may ask. Well being a web developer, i usually have only 100 things going on in my head at a time. I like to aim to cut this down to one. Since i think my brain is single cpu, and it tends to bluescreen often. However, this doesn’t mean i can’t stay organised.

As i am working through my projects or work i tend to come up with bugs, or new ideas. I hit the shortcut defined for me to bring up the Things HUD, which allows me to enter in the note, and keep working with what i was working on at hand. This allows me not to get interrupted by new scary ideas that make me want to jump off bridges. So instead of springing off bridges, i fix the bugs at hand. How do i keep track of an overflowing inbox? Well review that sucker like no tomorrow. Make yourself a promise, that once you write your entry in there, a few hours later you will organise them into manageable chunks, and a time and place where you will meet your brain to accomplish the set out task.

So how do i organise? Well after i fix a ticket, when i can mark an entry off as i jump to the inbox. Then drag and drop the items out either into the schedule, the today, or the projects window. Making sure they are lined up in the right order of priority. So then i can jump into the next item that requires my attention without even thinking or allocating any brain power to thinking what would be next or how to fix the next problem when i haven’t even fixed up the current problem!

What is also awesome, especially for the web2.0 wankers, is that you can sync your iPhone and iPodz to the program, so easily. So your hip or pocket will never be unorganised ever again, while you ride to the nearest starbucks in your tweed vest on your slim road bike! Damn you’re cool, and so organised!

There are plenty of things to things, but you are best to check it out on the website! Well worth the money . Hopefully the developers check out this page and think wow, we are awesome, we owe it to ourselves to buy ourselves a beer each. Or something!
